Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is naturally produced in the body and may protect against cell damage in a variety of conditions. Some food such as spinach, broccoli, and yeast are rich in alpha lipoic acid. ALA exists as two different enantiomers; the biologically active (R)-isomer and the (S)-isomer, found primarily in synthesized ALA supplements. NOW® ALA is a mixture of these two isomers. Alpha lipoic acid has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal in patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients who took alpha lipoic acid 600 to 1800 mg daily had significant improvement in insulin resistance and glucose effectiveness after four weeks of treatment. Alpha lipoic acid is both water and fat soluble and can regenerate endogenous antioxidants, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and glutathione to prevent oxidative damage. Directions:
Adult Dosage: Take 1 capsule, 2-3 times daily with meals.
