Melatonin, in its naturally-occurring form is an indole neurohormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland, from the amino acid tryptophan, with regulation of day-night changes in synthesis by serotonin N-acetyltransferase. The synthesis and release of melatonin is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light, suggesting the involvement of melatonin in circadian rhythm and regulation of diverse body functions. Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest prior to bedtime. Supplemental melatonin has been used for a variety of medical conditions, most notably for disorders related to sleep, such as jet lag, delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), and insomnia, for which there exists an ample body of research. NOW® offers one of the most economical and potent sources of high quality melatonin in this 3 mg quick release capsule.
Directions
Adults Only Dosage: Take 1-3 capsules daily, at or before bedtime. For use beyond 4 weeks, consult a health care practitioner.
Risk Information
Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have a hormonal disorder, diabetes, cerebral palsy, liver or kidney disease, seizure disorders, migraine, depression and/or hypertension or if you are taking blood pressure or sedative/hypnotic medications. If symptoms persist continuously for more than 4 weeks (chronic insomnia), consult a health care practitioner. Do not use if you are taking immunosuppressive drugs, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not drive or use machinery for 5 hours after taking melatonin.

Précautions
Consumption with alcohol, other medications or natural health products with sedative properties is not recommended. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking one of the following medications: anticoagulant, anticonvulsant, blood pressure medications, immunosuppressive medications, sedative, hypnotic or pschotropic medications, or steroids. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have one of the following conditions:asthma, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, depression, diabetes or hypoglycaemia, hormonal disorder, immune system disese, liver disease, migraine, or seizure disorders. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use this product. Mild gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, or cramping) and/or rare allergic reactions have been known to occur in which case, discontinue use.
